Anna Netrebko and friends

Last saturday I went to The Orangerie gardens at the Palais de Versaiiles to the Anna Netrebko Gala where she sang some opera arias with Ekaterina Gubanova, Ildar Abdrazakov and Yusif Eyvazov under the direction of Marco Armiliato with the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France.

Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov gave the best performances to which the public responded with enthusiasm.

What a great night!

My God, it is going to be big trouble for Callas

Sutherland, Zeffirelli recalled, was discovered by Tullio Serafin, who also worked with Maria Callas and who urged Zeffirelli to direct her in her 1959 Covent Garden performance of Lucia di Lammermoor. I went to the hotel, and he said, ‘I want you to meet someone. Don’t worry about her looks, We went to the theatre and I saw her, as big as a sergeant in the army with a terrible Australian accent. I was really embarrassed. We started to hang out and play the piano and she started to sing, and she conquered me.

“I said, my God, it is going to be big trouble for Callas.”

“She was tremendously down to earth and tremendously joyous to be with,” Terracini said. “When she came into the rehearsal room the whole place would light up and I think in performances I think that joy communicated from the stage to an audience in quite an extraordinary.

Siphiwo Ntshebe

Paz à alma do Pavarotti negro.
