Em lituano diz-se “Užupis” que é também o nome dum antigo guetto judeu, que após a II guerra mundial foi ocupado pelos destítuidos e artistas. Depois da queda do império soviético a estátua de Lenine foi retirada da praça central, deixando o pedestral vazio, onde os artistas locais colocaram uma estátua de Frank Zappa.

Em 1997 declarou-se independente de Vilnius, uma república com presidente, bispo, embaixador em Moscovo e nada mais nada menos que quatro bandeiras. Este feito é celebrado a 1 de Abril.
